Heat pumps are the first choice when it comes to combining cost savings and environmentally friendly heat generation. This is because the energy used by a heat pump heating system is provided by the environment in unlimited quantities, free of charge. The full-fledged heating system only requires a small amount of electricity for the drive and the pump to make this energy usable. A heat pump works independently of fossil fuels when operated by renewable electricity and actively contributes to reducing CO₂ emissions and thus contributing to climate protection.

How an air-to-water heat pump works

Heat pumps provide efficient heating and cooling by using electricity to absorb heat energy from outdoor air and transfering that heat to the indoor space. An outdoor unit draws outdoor air over a refrigerant heat exchanger coil, absorbing heat energy from the outdoor air and transferring it to the indoor space via the refrigerant cycle. In cooling mode the heat pump operates in reverse, absorbing heat from indoor spaces to transfer outdoors. Air-to-Water Heat Pumps (ATWHP) absorb and transfer heat from air to water, while Split Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) only transfer heat from air to air.

Air-to-Water Heat Pumps also have advantages over Air Source Heat Pumps such as Domestic Hot Water production and increased application flexibility. For example, Air-to-Water Heat Pumps absorb and transfer heat to water while Air Source Heat Pumps transfer heat through air- This means Air-to-Water Heat Pumps can generate Domestic Hot Water for your home, while an Air Source Heat Pump cannot. Air-to-Water Heat Pumps can be used with radiant space heating or forced air applications, and integrate easily into hydronic systems. Air Source Heat Pumps are limited only to forced air applications and do not integrate with radiant heating or hydronic systems.
