PDH Credited Online Seminars

Decoding Boiler Ratings

Time: 1 PM - 2 PM EST

Instructor: Jody Samuell

When selecting a boiler for a project the designer is often faced with the task of determining what a boiler’s output is in their application to properly size it. We will examine the various ratings and efficiencies associated with a boiler and how there are generated. Given that most applications do not mirror testing conditions, we will relate these ratings to sizing a boiler for an application. Finally, the question often comes up about how to verify the efficiency of a condensing boiler. We will examine how, given system conditions, to verify a condensing boiler’s efficiency.

Learning Objectives:

On completion of this presentation the attendees will be able to:

  • For residential boilers, explain how the Input, DOE output, Net AHRI Output, and AFUE numbers are derived.
  • For commercial boilers, explain where the Input, Combustion efficiency, Thermal efficiency, Output, and Net AHRI output are derived.
  • Relate the boiler ratings to sizing a boiler for an application.
  • For a commercial boiler, given a set of operating conditions, estimate the boiler’s output.
  • For a condensing boiler explain how a field efficiency test is conducted.
Boiler Control Strategies

Time: 1 PM - 2 PM EST

Instructor: Jody Samuell

Whether it is a single boiler or multiple boilers, the method of boiler control influences how effective the system can be. In this presentation we will look at boiler control strategies and answer the following questions:

  • What needs to be controlled?

  • How do we approach multiple water temperatures?

  • BMS vs onboard control, can they co-exist?

  • Multiple boiler installations, what is the best way to approach this?

Learning Objectives:

  • List the requirements  for a boiler’s onboard control

  • Describe how to control multiple water temperatures

  • Contrast the methods of controlling boilers when interfacing with BMS

Residential DHW Water Heating with a Boiler

Time: 1 PM - 2 PM EST

Instructor: Jody Samuell

Often with a residential project, the decision is made to couple the DHW load to the space heating boiler. The question then becomes whether to go with a combi boiler or add an indirect water heater to the boiler plant. In this presentation we will examine the two methods and answer the following questions:

  • Sizing for water heating, how should you approach it?
  • Sizing the boiler, what is different between the two approaches?
  • How are the DHW design considerations different?
  • What are the performance differences?
  • The third option, Instantaneous generation with DHW storage, where does it fit?

Learning Objectives:

  • Contrast the differences between an indirect water heater and a combi boiler in how they meet a hot water demand

  • Compare the sizing process for combi boilers and indirect water heaters.

  • Describe the pros and cons of using a combi boiler and an indirect water heater

  • Describe how a DHW storage tank loading system works and the advantages of this type of system.

Venting Strategies

Time: 1 PM - 2 PM EST

Instructor: Jody Samuell

In the world of boiler venting, there are 4 categories of gas boiler venting and many approaches to venting. In the webinar, we will examine the two main categories, category I and IV venting. For each category, we will outline the requirements of the vent system. Additionally, we will look at vent sizing based on tables and also sizing with vent sizing software. As important as the exhaust gas venting is the combustion air.. We will also examine combustion air requirements, both for sealed systems as well as systems using room air.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the factors involved in vent sizing

  • Explain how equivalent lengths are calculated for venting

  • Explain the difference between Cat I and Cat IV Venting.

  • Describe the sizing process for oil boilers and for Cat I and Cat IV venting.

  • Explain the Joukowski Effect as applied to boiler venting
